IR light with Intel RealSense Depth Camera D435
Hello,
we have two D435 cameras an we really like them. We want to use them for a vision project, in which infrared light is used. We want to use IR lights and capture the IR wavelength. So we are curious how to achieve this.
We have the following questions:
1. Are there any hard- or software filters for IR light for the D435? (for example wavelength filters)
2. The left and right imager of the stereo modul of the D435 capture 400 to 865 nm. Can this spectrum be configured somewhere?
3. Are there any informations available about the spectral range (in nm) of the RGB color sensor of the D435? We could not find them in the datasheet.
Any help is always appreciated. Thank you very much.
Best regards,
Michael

Hi Michael Harder Thanks for your questions!
1. Intel have an in-depth guide at the link below for using physical optical filter products of various types with RealSense 400 Series cameras.
https://dev.intelrealsense.com/docs/optical-filters-for-intel-realsense-depth-cameras-d400
2. Using one of the optical filter types in the above guide should enable you to configure the range of light frequencies that are able to enter the camera lenses. Section 3 of the paper (linked to below) has charts showing the effect that different types of filter (longpass, shortpass, bandpass and notch) have on nm frequencies.
An especially useful type of optical filter to use with a 400 Series camera is a thin-film linear polarization filter. This significantly negates glare from reflections, enabling reflective surfaces such as window glass to appear much more clearly on camera images, like the without-and-with picture below.

In regard to sourcing optical filters, for linear polarization filters any polarizing filter should work so long as it is linear (except for the circular filters in 3D glasses). You can find inexpensive examples by searching stores such as Amazon for the term linear polarizing filter sheet
For other types of filter, a discussion at the link below provides some recommendations for purchasing sources.

3. My understanding is that the spectral range of the imaging sensors used in 400 Series cameras is a subject that does not have publicly available information available about it due to it being a topic that requires having a non-disclosure agreeement (NDA) with Intel.

Hello MartyG,
thank you very much for this detailed answer. I really appreciate it.
I will check this guide out and also bought an linear polarization filter. Just to be sure, there is no official list of suppliers for filters of any kind for the Realsense D435?
I am looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks.
Best regards,
Michael

There is not an official Intel-validated list of suppliers for filters. The filter sourcing recommendations from agrunnet in the link below can be considered highly reliable though.
