Extend usb cable 20 m
I need to extend the USB connection from my computer to a D415 camera to about 20 meters. I've looked at Newnex, but I'm a bit confused and overwhelmed by the plenty options.
- Cable length: the longest active cables I could find was 16 m long, and pricy.
- Shipping: as I live in Norway, I'm wondering if there might be better more suited options than Newnex for delivery to Europe.
- Potential issues: I've seen some posts on the forum here describing issues (choosing 2.0 vs 3.0, etc.), would hate to end up buying something that won't work or cause me problems.
Additionally, I'm wondering if a USB over Ethernet could be just as good a solution? I'd imagine this being a more versatile solutions, if it means that you could use the same technology more or less regardless of length and just swap out the Ethernet cable to desired length. Not sure if that's the case, but?
Does anyone have experience with extending the USB connection and advice for what solution and product I should get?

Hi Tormod Slupphaug I would recommend using only one active repeater cable with RealSense cameras, as I had a case where there were problems with connecting to the camera with 30 meters worth of repeater cable.
Also, camera firmware should not be updated using an active repeater cable due to the risk of failure of the firmware update process before it has completed when updating with such a cable. So it is best to keep the official short cable supplied with the camera for occasions when you want to update the camera's firmware.
Ethernet can provide a connection range of up to 100 meters but the supported data transfer bandwidth is smaller than with USB This is described in a table in Intel's white-paper document on setting up an open-source ethernet network with RealSense cameras. Standard CAT5 ethernet cabling should be sufficient though, as the ethernet networking guide confirms.
Newnex would be my primary recommendation of USB cable supplier, based mainly on the facts that they are proven to work with RealSense and are officially recommended by Intel in the data sheet document for the 400 Series cameras as a purchasing source for USB cables. Newnex have a dedicated web-page for RealSense:

Newnex are not the only provider of high-quality USB cables that can work with RealSense though. 'High quality' is a key term when choosing long cables, as RealSense connections can degrade and even disconnect if a cable longer than 2 meters is used that is not premium quality ('industrial grade'). So having the recommendation of RealSense users is useful in order to select a cable that has a good chance of working well.
Over the last few years, some RealSense users have recommended OCP cables as an alternative, though the available sizes on the link below are 5 meters maximum.
The link below has a list of international Intel Authorised Distributors to provide additional purchasing confidence. You can select Norway from the drop-down list of countries to see recommendations for your location.
