D405 integrated in a medical device
Hi everyone,
Sorry to bother you with this non-technical question but I could not find any other place to do so, so I will just shoot it here.
We are working on a medical device which guides surgeons during their operation.
My team found that the D405 was one of our best options on the market for our needs,
however reading the documentation I found out that Intel kind of refuses that medical applications use their products.
Do you know if it is still possible to use the D405 if we take full responsibility if anything happens ?
Do you know any other " medical project" using the D400's sensors ?
Thank you very much for your help !!

Hi X Maurice I am not aware of such a condition about medical applications having ever being applied by Intel regarding the RealSense product range. RealSense cameras have been used widely for body capture of both humans and animals and their Class 1 laser status makes them safe for exposure to human eyes. International safety certification information for the range can be found at the link below.

On the product listing for the D405 in the official online RealSense Store, wound care management is listed as an example of an application for the model's accurate close-range sensing capabilities.

An official RealSense blog article from 2020 discusses example uses of RealSense technology for healthcare applications.

On the same blog, use of RealSense cameras on the Everdrone medical flying drone system, on smart wheelchairs and for disability accessibility is highlighted.

There are also various sources such as research papers that explore RealSense for medical applications. Just a few of the available examples in the links below look at using RealSense for measuring health outcomes in clinical research, treating wounds in a United Kingdom hospital and monitoring respiration.

I hope that the information resources above will provide reassurance. Please feel free to ask any additional questions.

There is also now the option of integrating the D405's technology directly into your own product design using the RealSense D401 Depth Module, the camera circuit board inside the D405 that is now separately purchasable.
Please be aware that for products manufactured by a company other than Intel that integrate RealSense camera technology, that company will be responsible for providing technical support of their product for their customers.

Intel do not get involved in how a company uses its RealSense products or integrates the technology into its own products unless assistance is requested by that company and there are not licensing fees for use of the technology.
If you feel that your company may require advanced technical support beyond what is available publicly then you can request the granting of a RealSense Non Disclosure Agreement (NDA) with Intel.
Intel can also assist with bulk ordering of RealSense hardware when you are ready to scale up production.
