Shadowing effect from D400 series cameras
I am comparing the depth image of from the L515 and D455 and observe a shadowing effect from objects that are closer to the camera. Both images taken below were with cameras about 0.5m away from the subject. I did a similar test with the D435 as well. Shadowing effect was also observed but not as severe as in the D455. Does anybody know what is causing this, and if there are parameters/settings which can be adjusted to reduce the effect? Thanks in advance.

Hi Ronghao Jonathantan May I begin by confirming what the shadowing effect that you are referring to is - the black outline around your body, or the rough black area at the bottom of the image? Thanks!

This effect typically occurs on 400 Series stereo cameras that generate the depth image from the left and right infrared sensor components (hence the term 'stereo'), which are at different positions in the camera. L515 uses a different camera technology based on scannng with a mirror.
Because the D455 is significantly wider than the D435, the distance between the center-line of the left and right imagers is 50 mm on D435 and 95 mm on D455.

Ideally, the black outline around an object should be roughly equal all around, though sometimes it is shifted mostly to the left side of a person / object like in your image. Performing a calibration of the camera may improve the results.
The L515 model can scan 23 million accurate depth points per second.
