    The DFU tool requires a USB 3.1 connection.  Is your camera inserted in a USB 3.1 port on your PC please?  It will not work in a USB 2.0 port.

    Sometimes a camera may be detected as a USB2 connection even when in a USB 3 port.  A way to check whether this is occurring is to run the RealSense Viewer program and see if the camera name at the top of the side panel says "Intel RealSense USB2".   If it does, try inserting the camera into the USB port quickly and firmly instead of slowly and see if it is detected correctly as a D435i camera.

    If you have a USB 3.1 port then another symptom of this issue can be a corrupted 'calibration table' inside the camera.  The link below details the process for performing a gold reset to factory default to reset the camera.
