D405/D415/D435/D455 capablilities
I am looking for a depth camera capable of measuring the surface/volume of a lock of hair.
Is one of the Intel Realsense cameras (specifically the D405, D415, D435 or D455) capable of this? Does it "see" locks of hair?
Thanks in advance for any advice,
Julien

Hi Julien Hyra It would depend on how large the lock of hair is. A single hair would be too thin for the camera to depth-sense. An object should be at least as large as a group of 9 pixels on the image in order to be trackable.
If you are going to be measuring at very close range then the D405 model would be the only option for you, as it is designed for high quality, high accuracy depth sensing and has an ideal depth sensing range of 7 to 50 cm. If necessary it can measure as close as 4 cm away from the observed object if the Disparity Shift and Depth Unit Scale options are adjusted to values of between 100 and 200 for Disparity Shift and 0.1 for Depth Unity Scale.
In regard to hair color, the camera would likely have difficulty measuring black hair. This is because it is a general physics principle (not specific to RealSense) that dark grey or black absorbs light and so makes it more difficult for depth cameras to read depth information from such surfaces. The darker the color shade, the more light that is absorbed and so the less depth detail that the camera can obtain. Casting a strong light source onto a black surface can help to bring out depth information from the surface.
