Face Recognition Application
Hi, we are a company that are involved in face recognition. We would like to use 3D camera for face recognition purpose. We need to collect 3D face models using the camera and then using computer learning methods to build a model for the purpose of face recognition. We need to collect RGB and depth data from the camera at a distance that is less than 1m. Which camera model would you recommend to accomplish this task? We are also looking for a camera that has a SDK that supports Windows and Linux environments.
What about the general availability of these cameras? If we need to purchase X amount of these cameras will they be available in the next few months? Are they available now?

Hi Marcin If you anticipate that the subjects being scanned may move their faces in close proximity to the camera then the RealSense D435i camera model would be an appropriate choice. This is because it has a minimum depth sensing distance of 0.1 meters (10 cm), meaning that a face can get near to the camera before the depth image begins breaking up at distances under 0.1 m.
If image quality and resolution are important to you and you are confident that the subjects will not be closer than 0.3 m to the camera then the D415 model may meet your needs. Though it has a smaller field of view than the D435i (meaning that it can see less of a scene), a human face should still be able to fit into its field of view at close range. It also has an optimal depth sensing resolution of 1280x720 (compared to 848x480 on the D435i).
All RealSense 400 Series models can be used with the RealSense SDK development software which supports both Windows and Linux.
RealSense cameras can be obtained from the official online RealSense Store.

At the time of writing this, RealSense cameras are out of stock and due to resume shipping from the RealSense Store in the week of January 23 2022. The D435i model is currently listed as in stock at the online retailer Rutronik24 though.
