L515 Outdoor Use
Hi,
I have been looking at outdoor use for the L515 (I know not recommended etc.) and was wondering for some of technical reasons why it does not do as well. Is it due to the increase in infrared light outdoors? And if so have any users found settings that are able to improve the performance of the device outside (I have tested the device outside a bit and have found the scans are not awful)? Any thoughts or feedback on this would be great.

The RealSense LiDAR Camera L515 will not work well outdoors. Infrared light from the sun can interfere with the performance of the device which can degrade the quality of the depth images when used outdoors. As a power-efficient LiDAR camera, L515 will perform best indoors or in controlled lighting conditions. therefore, The L515 is the perfect product for any indoor application that requires accurate depth data in the range of 0.25-9 m. Typical use cases could be pick and place for warehouse robotics, volumetric measurement and room scanning.
Some customers have ideas to redesign the L515 by adding some components to improve the performance. But Intel does not sell components that will allow you to build your own LiDAR solution. Adding extra lasers to supplement the L515 will only deteriorate its performance and not work at all.
