Request for camera recommendation – higher image clarity for component and character detection (OCR)
Hello,
I’m currently using the Intel RealSense D435i camera for a project involving image capture of electrical components. The goals are:
-
To detect screws using RGB and depth data.
-
To perform OCR to read characters printed on the components.
However, I’m facing a serious problem: the RGB image quality of the D435i is too blurry, even after multiple adjustments (distance, lighting, resolution, etc.). This makes both screw detection and character recognition very unreliable. The depth data is also not precise enough for this use case.
➡️ I’ve attached a few example images so you can clearly see the problem.
My question is:
Is there another RealSense camera (in the same or different product line) that provides better image sharpness and resolution, suitable for close-range detailed analysis such as OCR and small object detection?
Ideally, I’m looking for a camera that:
-
Offers better RGB resolution or optical quality than the D435i.
-
Can properly focus at short distances.
-
Provides clearer images for machine vision and OCR use.
Thank you very much in advance for your help and suggestions!
Best regards,
-
Hi Damiatamani456 There is a new generation of RealSense camera product coming soon called the D555. Its new Image Signal Processor (ISP) technology enhances RGB with Geometric Distortion Correction and Temporal Noise Reduction. Its recommended minimum depth sensing distance is 26 cm, however.

As discussed in your previous case, the other alternative would be the D405, which provides high quality, high accuracy depth and RGB images at very close range. It can have difficulty with reading depth information from plain surfaces though because it is not equipped with an infrared pattern emitter component like the D435i is. Using an inexpensive visible pattern projector like the USB toy one referenced below may enable a texture to be projected onto your components to improve depth analysis.
