Is Depth/Color alignment needed for the D455 like it was for D435?

Yes, you would still need to deliberately align depth and color with code on D455.  The changes with D455 in regard to alignment are to do with its hardware design rather than the way in which it is programmed.  The D455 has the following internal features that provide improved alignment compared to D435 / D435i:

    -  Both depth and RGB have the same field of view (FOV) size

    - The depth and RGB sensors are mounted on the same internal stiffener

    - The RGB sensor has a fast Global Shutter like the depth sensors for the first time (earlier 400 Series models had a slower Rolling Shutter on the RGB sensor).

The link below provides an excellent short summary of the D455's features.
