Best accuracy at close range D435, D455, T515?
Hello,
I am using the D435 cameras to scan little objects (3cm height, 10cm lengthh, 4 cm with approx.) at close range (between 20 and 40cm distance to the camera). I am wondering if I should switch to D455 or lidar L515.
The only thing I need to know for that is to know if one of this cameras is more accurate than the D435 at small range. Could you tell me if they are more accurate, and if the difference would be notable? Would the accuracy be less than 1mm at ~25cm, with one of these cameras?
Thank you for your help,
Emmanuel

Hi Emmanuel. At very close range I don't think you will get much benefit from changing cameras, as the error factor starts at near zero at the camera lens and increases linearly over distance. So at 25 cm range, a D415, D435 and D455 are likely to have very similar error.
Whilst I cannot comment on L515 performance (as questions for that model are handled on the RealSense GitHub forum), I believe that the error factor at close range will be closely comparable to the 400 Series models.
I would instead recommend trying to apply the ShortRangePreset camera configuration preset file. This configuration is not built into the RealSense Viewer program. You can download it from the RealSense SDK's Visual Presets page. Please visit the link below and scroll down the page to the Additional presets not in the Viewer section.
https://github.com/IntelRealSense/librealsense/wiki/D400-Series-Visual-Presets#preset-table

You can test the preset file in the RealSense Viewer program by drag and dropping the file onto the center panel of the Viewer.
It is not advisable to move the camera below 20 cm from the object, as this can cause the left and right infrared sensors on the 400 Series cameras to become confused.
In regard to achieving around 1 mm accuracy at 25 cm: for the 400 Series and L515, error is typically between 2.5 mm and 5 mm at 1 meter range. So it is possible that you may be able to get closer to 1 mm (below 2.5 mm) at 25 cm (0.25 meter) range.
