RealSense cameras are a Class 1 laser device and do not interfere with each other (their fields of view can also be overlapped without problems), so the likelihood of damage from observing each others' light is very low.

The kind of scenario you describe, where two cameras are looking directly at each other, may also be encountered in multiple camera setups where cameras are arranged in a circle in an inward-pointing orientation for 360 degree data capture, and negative consequences for the camera hardware have not been documented for such setups (though of course such a setup will not typically have been tested for several years continuously).

The 400 Series is also designed to run indefinitely so long as the camera remains within recommended temperature tolerances.  If the camera is within temperature tolerances then if problems do manifest during a long-run then it will typically be due to non-camera factors.  These can include environmental lighting, problems in the USB cable / port or the computer hardware, or a glitch in the computer's operating system.
