Difference in left and right camera
While conducting some experiments with a Realsense D435, I noted a different reaction from the left and right camera upon incoming light. I suppose this has something to do with how the auto gain control is configured. Is it possible that the auto gain of both cameras is adjusted to the input of only one camera? In other words, is it possible that these cameras are some sort of master slave setup, where the auto gain of the slave camera just follows the auto gain of the master camera? For the Realsense D435, I presume the left camera to be the master camera.

Hi Jaan Goyvaerts The left and right infrared sensors do not have a master and slave arrangement, though the center-line of the left IR sensor is the default 0,0,0 origin point of the depth image. The data sheet document for the 400 Series cameras provides the following information regarding how a depth frame is constructed using the left and right sensors.

The left and right imagers capture the scene and send imager data to the depth imaging (vision) processor, which calculates depth values for each pixel in the image by correlating points on the left image to the right image and via the shift between a point on the left image and the right image. The depth pixel values are processed to generate a depth frame. Subsequent depth frames create a depth video stream.
